‘A Simple Matter’

When my eyes cracked open again, Fiore was not in the bed next to me. I sat upright, looking around the room.

I sniffed.

She was in the house, but not in the room.

I sniffed again.

Food.

‘I’m in the kitchen. Are you hungry?’

I jolted.

She was communicating with me in our special way and it sent shivers down my spine. I moistened my lips, not sure how to respond. Of course, I should say yes, and of course I would; but this woman, my mate - she was making me happy, happier than I had been in my entire life. Did she know how much she meant to me? Did she realize that the bond we were nurturing was my lifeline? Did she understand that we were meant to be forever?

I swallowed. ‘I am coming,’ I communicated back. I threw my legs over the bed and raked my hands through my mussed hair. I looked up and searched the room, dismayed to see my clothes, shredded in a pile on the floor. I had not thought to bring more.

Fiore’s voice sounded off in my head again. ‘Baby, look on the settee.’

Baby...

My eyes shot over to a small seat tucked in the corner of the room. On top of it, there was a pair of joggers, a t-shirt, and underwear, and on the floor next to it was a bag with a curious red and white circle on it.

My heart augmented a million times its original size. I walked over to the items and touched them, and when I looked in the bag I noticed a collar and a leash.

I grinned.

Our mate, she is very naughty. What is she planning for us? I asked my wolf, and he responded with an excited bark.

I rushed into the shower, dismayed that I had to use Fiore’s feminine-smelling body wash, but when I came out smelling like her, I considered that I did not mind so much after all. I flossed and scrubbed my teeth with her toothbrush and headed down the stairs to the kitchen. I gazed at Fiore. She was standing at the stove. Several pans were on the fire, and I saw fresh oranges, which she had cut in half and used to make juice.

“You smell nice,” she commented, grinning.

I grimaced but she laughed, looking over her shoulder at me. “Do the clothes fit okay?”

I ran my hands over the front of my t-shirt and pants. “They are perfect for me,” I said. “When did you get these things?”

She wiped her hands on a dish towel and turned to face me. “While you were asleep, I ran to Target and picked them up. After the way you shed out of what you had on last night, pun intended, I anticipated you’d need something to wear.”

My Fiore is so smart.

I lifted my nose towards the steaming pans and sat at a table, which had been prepared for two. “What are you cooking for me?”

Her eyes sparkled. “Guess.”

My brows joined. “You are making me an American breakfast,” I suggested, playing her little game.
